Budapest, October 1, 2007 -- The five-member
international jury announced winners of the Chachipe Roma Decade photography contest, which
aimed to combat negative
stereotypes of Roma.
The best News Photo is The World of Information by Tünde Erika Pálosi from
Romania; the best Family Photo is Children of the Hills by Zoltán Bereczki from Romania; the best Portrait Photo is Face by Gyula Czimbal from
Hungary,
and the best Photo Essay is Flight (1-5) by Nina Nikolova
from Bulgaria.
The winning photographs, along with
approximately 100 other photos selected by the jury and the contest organizers, will be exhibited at an exhibition that
opens on October 25 at the OSA Archivum’s Galeria
Centralis.
In November, the winners will visit Paradise Lost, the First Roma Pavilion in Venice.
The contest was organized under the Decade of Roma Inclusion 2005-2015 by the Open
Society Institute and OSA Archivum. The organizers
sought photographs that help combat visual stereotypes associated with Roma and
present Roma people and Roma culture sensitively and artistically. The intention
was to authentically portray Roma as an integral part of their broader national
communities. Over 2000 entries
were received before the submission deadline.
“I
don’t regularly take photos with a Roma topic because it is not the only subject I am interested in,” says Tünde Erika Pálosi, one of
the contest winners.
“But everyday I see many aspects of the life of Roma in urban and
rural conditions. Since my childhood I was impressed with their music and dance, but in the last years I am focused on their social condition. By taking photos I try to understand their life.
In my opinion art and culture are able to build bridges among nations because they offer some deep emotional values different
from regular messages.
I think that better understanding of Roma
culture in the present
has the same importance as the understanding of Central and East European peoples’ cultures had at the beginning of the 20th century” – said Tünde Erika Pálosi, one of
the Chachipe contest winners.
Following were the
members of the Chachipe jury: Zsuzsanna Ardó, Chair, Hungary/United
Kingdom, Nadir Redžepi, Macedonia, Mircea Toma, Romania, Ivan Veselý, Czech
Republic, and Chad Wyatt, United States.
